A Second Career Mindset - Preparing For Your Interview

Posted on 1:00 AM by admin

Updating your resume is like writing your life's script. Be reminded of your milestones (achievements) yet prepare to chalk up new ones. Which new skills have you acquired recently? A new hobby is a good start because you will learn new knowledge and skills.

So, you attempted writing your interview script. How do you then rehearse your script?

How does your CHARACTER look like? How will your CHARACTER look and sound like? How will you handle your success and failure?

Have you considered the 7 Questions: WHAT, WHO, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, WHICH and HOW?

How will you act when conducting yourself for an interview? Do you convey confidence, clarity and conviction? Which ways do you stay alert, steady and sharp?

Speak at various speeds: fast, slow, pause.

Speak in various tones so that your voice reflects your emotions.

Mean what you say, and say what you mean.

Commit to your emotions. Sound enthusiastic if you use the word "enthusiasm". Sound as if you care when you say, "caring". Be courageous when you mention "courage".

Experience yourself before you allow others to experience YOU.

Convince yourself of WHAT you say, WHAT you think, HOW you relate, and WHAT your opinions are.

Thus, your SCRIPT is used for articulating those words of your industry. If it is an interview for a Human Resource position, be aware and utilise those industry terms and be very clear about each model or concept. If you are in management, what is the current mindset?

SETTING is your environment. What is your external environment like? How are you dressed for the occasion? How do you feel when you are dressed immaculately? How pleasant do you smell? Do you smell annoyingly good? Do you look neat and presentable? How are you SET UP for success?

Your Internal Environment or Setting is just as important. How you feel is how you will project to the world. As you rehearse externally by way of way of a mirror, or DVD, or in your head (known as "mental flying" or visualization) be conscious of your mannerisms and habits.

Rehearse your scenes, particularly the interview, by researching the company and its industry. Note the strengths, challenges, peculiarities and opportunities intrinsic and inherent in this company.

Your CHARACTER at the interview is expected to articulate and express words that sound familiar to your Interviewer. Appear to sound informed, and thoroughly researched. Above all, indicate your interest in your new industry and profession. You must be interested in order to create a chance.

Your CHARACTER is you. It is WHO you ARE, and WHOM you will PRESENT.

In Alexander Dumas' "The Man In The Iron Mask", the true king was hidden from the world twice: in prison, and behind a mask.

Consultant-guru, Peter Bloc wrote: "We wear different masks to work." Which mask do you wear, and do you PROJECT yourself from behind your mask? Or do you hide behind your mask?
